Medeama Sporting Club extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches after a pulsating 2–2 draw with Asante Kotoko on Sunday in the Week 12 Ghana Premier League clash at the Baba Yara Stadium. The Mauve and Yellows produced a dominant first-half performance, racing into a 2–0 lead, but the hosts fought back late to snatch a point in stoppage time.
Electric Start as Medeama Stamp Their Authority
The match kicked off with Kotoko threatening early, but goalkeeper Felix Kyei reacted brilliantly to calm nerves. Medeama swiftly settled into their rhythm, slowing the tempo and passing confidently out from the back.
Their composure paid off in the 5th minute. A beautifully constructed move released Abdul Salam on the left edge of Kotoko’s box. With exquisite technique, he whipped a stunning trivela across the area to find Derrick Fordjour, who unleashed an unstoppable non-drop strike beyond goalkeeper Camara to make it 1–0.
Inspired by the opener, Medeama dictated the pace, outclassing Kotoko in midfield with intelligent ball circulation and well-timed presses. The home side’s occasional counterattacks were expertly dealt with by the solid Medeama backline.
In the 15th minute, Medeama launched another dangerous attack, with Prince Owusu slaloming past two defenders before being tripped by Kotoko captain Samba O’Neill. The referee pointed straight to the spot.
Skipper Yussif Mubarik stepped up in the 18th minute and converted with ice-cold precision, sending Camara the wrong way to extend the lead to 2–0.
Shortly after, Coach Tanko was forced into an early defensive switch, bringing on Paul Yeboah for the injured Desmond Baffoe in the 20th minute.
KOTOKO PUSH BACK, MEDEAMA HOLD FIRM
Kotoko mounted sustained pressure in the final 10 minutes of the half in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but the Mauve and Yellows remained resolute. They were aided twice by the frame of the goal as the hosts came close, but Medeama’s defensive discipline ensured a 2–0 advantage at the break.
SECOND-HALF INTENSITY AND PRESSURE
Kotoko returned from the interval with renewed energy and a more aggressive approach, pressing Medeama high. In the 53rd minute, Manuel Mantey replaced Fuzy Taylor to stabilize midfield.
The Porcupine Warriors eventually broke through in the 58th minute as Peter Acquah capitalized on a loose defensive moment to pull one back, igniting the stadium and tilting momentum Kotoko’s way.
Tanko responded tactically, introducing Nyarko Henry and Nana Kofi Babil for Prince Owusu and Fordjour in the 62nd minute to regain attacking balance.
HEARTBREAK AT THE DEATH
Medeama held firm under increasing Kotoko pressure, showing remarkable determination to protect their lead. But in the 93rd minute, the home side snatched an equalizer. A well-delivered free kick found captain Samba O’Neill, who rose highest to head past Felix Kyei, making it 2–2 and denying Medeama all three points.
Despite the late blow, the Mauve and Yellows demonstrated admirable resilience and will feel proud of their performance in one of the league’s most challenging venues.
WHAT'S NEXT
Medeama return to Tarkwa to host Berekum Chelsea in Week 13, seeking to bounce back to winning ways while defending their position at the top of the Ghana Premier League standings. Tanko’s men sit at the summit with 23 points, tied with Aduana FC but ahead on goal difference.
